第2回 【write down （名詞 write-down）、write off （名詞 write-off） = 「 減損処理」】
write down と write off の違いは？
write down と write off は、どちらも「損失の処理」を意味するが、両者の違いは程度の問題である。write down は、資産価値における帳簿価額の切り下げなので「減損処理」と訳し、一方、write off は、資産の残高全体が、帳簿から完全に削除される場合なので、「除去損」、「償却」などと訳すのが妥当であろう。なお、特にwrite off は、上記とは別に、「債務の帳消し」としても頻繁に使用されるので、それらの訳し分けには留意しておきたい。
念のため、英英辞典による定義を確認しておく。
write down
Oxford Dictionary:
To reduce the value of assets when stating it in a company’s accounts
Cambridge Dictionary:
To show in a company’s accounts (= financial records) that something is worth less than it was before
Collins Dictionary:
If you write down an asset, you decrease its book value.
write off
Oxford Dictionary:
To cancel a debt; to recognize that something is a failure, has no value, etc.
Cambridge Dictionary:
To accept that an amount of money has been lost, for example, from a bad investment or a debt that will never be paid, and show it as a loss in a company’s accounts
Collins Dictionary:
To cancel (a bad debt or obsolete asset) from the accounts

本ブログにも頻繁に登場する英英辞書による定義。
日本人ならどうしても英和辞典に使い慣れていると思うが、筆者は、高校生の時から英英辞典を愛用している。なぜなら英英辞典の方がより各単語のもつ繊細なニュアンスが確認できるためである。
例えば、understand とgrasp 。英和辞典では、どちらも「理解する」である。これを英英辞典 (Oxford Dictionaryの場合) で調べると、
understand:
to know or realize the meaning of words, a language, what somebody says, etc.
grasp:
to understand something completely
と説明されている。
これによって、英和辞典では同じ「理解する」でも、英英辞典では、grasp の方が、「understand completely = 完全に理解する」として深い理解を表現したい時に使用するのが適当なのだ。
もう一つ確認してみよう。examineとscreen。どちらも「検査する」などで使える。だが、微妙にニュアンスが違うのだ。
examine:
to look at somebody/something closely, to see if there is anything wrong or to find the cause of a problem
screen:
to check something to see if it is suitable or if you want it
と説明され、特にscreenは、「検査する」点においては同じでも、より求める基準というもがあって、そｒに見合っているかを「検査する」時に使うのが正確な使い方なのだ。
このように、英和辞典では確認できない英語のもつ繊細なニュアンスを確認し、より正確で高度な翻訳をするためにも、ぜひ英英辞典も活用することをお勧めしたい。

「減損処理」の類義語に、declare impairment、impairment accounting もある。
そもそも「減損処理」とは？ － 金融翻訳には、金融専門知識の学習も不可欠！
金融分野の中でも、会計知識などは、ただ英語の訳語を知っているだけではなく、その用語等の意味も正確に理解しておく必要がある。それでないと、たいへんな誤訳にもつながりかねない。
したがって、
「減損処理」とは、企業が行う会計処理の1つであり、企業は、将来的な利益獲得のためなど、固定資産への投資を実施したりするが、その場合、投資した案件には、当初の予想に反し、資産の市場価格や企業収益の低下等に起因して、投資額の回復が見込めなくなることがある。
このような状況において、その価値の下落をバランスシートに反映させる手続きが必要で、それが減損処理である。つまり、減損処理は、ある一定条件下で、固定資産の帳簿価額を減額することを目的とする。
＜減損処理の対象＞
減損処理を行う対象となるのは、以下の3つである。
- 有形固定資産
- 無形固定資産
- その他の対象
- 有形固定資産
有形固定資産とは、建物や土地、機械装置、工具備品など、企業が長期に渡って使用することを目的に所有する資産である。
有形固定資産の中で、特に建設仮勘定と土地を除いた資産は、毎年「減価償却」によって価額が減額されるので、これらの資産は償却資産ともいう。
2. 無形固定資産
無形固定資産とは、特許権や借地権、商標権、実用新案権、電話加入権、営業権（のれん）など物的な形を持たない資産である。
無形固定資産は2種類に区別され、上記の権利を対象にした資産は「法的権利」、企業の超過収益力を内容とする資産は「営業権（のれん）」がある。
3. その他の対象資産
減損処理の対象は、有形固定資産と無形固定資産のいずれにも属さない資産「投資その他の資産」もある。貸借対照表（B/S）において、固定資産の1つに分類される資産である。
これは、大きく分けて、「（他の企業への）資本参加を目的とする投資」「長期資産運用」「その他の長期資産」の3つに分けられ、関係会社株式、投資有価証券、出資金、長期貸付金、長期前払費用などの勘定科目がある。
