第3回 【whereasを使いこなそう! ー whereas、while、whilst との違いをふまえ、超徹底マスター】
「その一方で 〜」の翻訳を考える時、日本人は往々にして接続詞 while 一辺倒であり、金融分野をはじめ、その他の分野でもネイティブはしっかり使っている接続詞 whereas をまったくと言っていいほど使いこなせていないように感じる。つまり while でもいいのだが、そればかりではなく、時には whereas を織り交ぜるだけで、少なくともその1文においてはワンランク上の洗練さを帯びた翻訳になるというわけだ。
したがって、本稿ではまず whereas と while や whilst との違いをチェック、次に whereas の使い方を筆者による完全オリジナルの模範翻訳とともに確認し、そして最後に欧米金融メディアで実際にどのように使われているか、その膨大な実用例を紹介していきたい。
whereas、while、whilst との違い
whereas、while、whilst の違いを正確に整理できていない日本人は極めて多い。結論として、基本となるのは3つ全ての意味をもつ while であり、whilst はその文語体であるだけで全く同じ定義での使い方をし、whereasは、whileのもつ3つの意味の1つだけ同じで、さらにもう1つ法律用語の意味が加わる。そのため、whereas をマスターするためには、必ず while の3つの意味をまず把握しておきたい。
while とは？
接続詞 while には次の3つがある:
① （期間・同時進行） ～している間に［ずっと］、～するうちに
② （対比） ～なのに対して、一方で
③ （逆説） ～だけれども
これをより繊細なニュアンスを掴むために英英辞典 Oxford Dictionary、Cambridge Dictionary、Longman Dictionary で確認しておきたい。①、②、③の定義/意味をそれぞれ対応させてみた。

英英辞典の語彙の説明は、辞典に応じてそれぞれ一長一短あるものなので、余力のある範囲で複数辞典を参照することをお勧めする。

以上、英英辞典の説明で、①、②、③それぞれのもつ細かなニュアンスがつかめたのではないだろうか。
① は、during とあるように「期間」的な意味であり、特に at the same time とあるように「同時進行」的な意味でよく使われる。
② は、contrast、compareで説明されているように、2つのもの（出来事なども含む）を対照、比較する意味で使われる。特にその2つは、相反するもの/事実であることが正しい使い方だ。
③ は、although、despiteのニュアンスをもつ逆説の意味で使われる。
<Note①>
- whileは、主文として文頭でも、副文として後部でもどちらでも使える。
- while S + V ~ を英語から日本語へ翻訳する場合は、必ずしもwhile S + V ~ の方に「～している間」、「～している一方で」、「～だが」などなどの表現を用いる必要はない。対で使われているもう一方の文の方にその表現をつけてもいいわけだ。つまり、日本語として正しく、自然であればいい。 例えば、I was reading a book, while I was watching TV. の場合、「私はテレビを見ながら本を読んでいた」でもいいし、「私は読書しながら、テレビを見ていた」でもいいわけだ。 そのあたり、中学、高校のお堅い文法からは脱皮したい。
- 英英辞典 ③の説明にて、③ (used at the beginning of a sentence) として、「文頭での使用」に限定していたりするが、厳密にはそうだが、実際にはネイティブは文頭以外でも使用するので、柔軟に活用しよう。

whileおよびwhilstの定義の特徴として、①、⓶、③の定義の区別がしにくい時も多々ある点には留意しておきたい。つまり、whileを使った文が、①の定義でも、⓶の定義でも、あるいは③の定義でもどれでも解釈できる場合もある、ということだ。
したがって、①、⓶、③の定義の区別にあまり神経質になり過ぎないことが大事で、それよりもこれら3つの定義がまず存在しているということをしっかり認識しておくことが重要であり、その解釈は文に応じて柔軟に対応することが肝心である。
while – 欧米金融メディア記事での実用例
それぞれの使い方を、金融、経済報道において世界的に突出した信頼性を誇る英国 Financial Times で実際に使われている例をもとに確認しておきたい。

以上、while がどのように英文で使われているかがよく理解できたのではないだろうか。
whilstとは？
whilst は、while の文語体であって、その意味も使い方もまったく同じである。ただ、文語体であればカジュアルな文章では使えないかというと、そういうわけでもなく、普通に、ニュース記事はもちろん、会話文などでも使われる。特に while ばかりのワンパターンな表現を避けるためにもぜひ使いなれておきたい。実際、あとでもふれるが、同一文章内にて、while を使ったり、whilst を使ったりと混在させて使っても問題ないのだ。
念のため、while の時と同様、英英辞典でその繊細なニュアンスを把握しておきたい。ここでも分るように、その説明は、while とまったく同じだ。

whereas を完全マスター
whereas の意味
ここまで、while とwhilst の定義と使い方を Financial Times の豊富な例文とともに確認してきた。
さて、いよいよ本稿の主人公 whereas の出番だ。
冒頭で少しふれたように、whereas の定義は、while の中の②のみと、法律用語としての2つだけである。 まったく複雑さなど何もない。ただ、日本人はこれまでその事実を知らされていなかっただけなのだ。
まず、他の語彙と同様、英英辞典にてその意味を確認しておこう。while や whilst になく、whereas だけにある法律用語の定義は、④として説明する。
英和辞典では、
④ （法律用語）〔文頭で〕 「～という次第だから」、「～という事実から見れば」
という定義である。

- Longman Dictionary の②の説明にて、<Formal> とあるが、他の Oxford Dictionary や Cambridge Dictionary には、それについての補足説明はなく、結局、前述の whilst と同様、whereas も while に比しては、フォーマル性を含んでいる語彙ではあるのだが、実際はフォーマルな文章に限らず、あらゆる文体にてネイティブは使っていることはしっかり理解しておきたい。それでないと、whereas の使用に消極的になってしまうからだ。
②の意味では、2つの事実を比較・対照することが基本の意味であるが、さらに付け加えると、その2つの事実は、while や whist と同様、お互いに相反する事実を表現する場合が正しい使い方であるということだ。
whereas の使い方
接続詞 whereas は、主文として文頭で、副文として文の後方で、どちらでも使える。
それでは、ここでこの whereas を使った筆者によるオリジナル模範翻訳で、さらに応用力、創造力、発想力を高めるための実践練習をしておこう。

この練習文では、販売数量の前年比にというテーマにて、小売業者の回答内容において、「減少」と「増加」それぞれの回答率の相反する結果を比較している。また、whereas の位置は、「70%以下～」で始まる主文の前に置いてもいい。 その場合は、

法務用語としてのwhereas
whereas ④ の意味として、法務用語としての使い方があることは先にてふれた。それを少しだけ確認しておこう。
主に英文契約書の前文（recital）として使用され、whereas 以下で契約に至った理由や経緯・背景事情を述べるときに使う。また、翻訳（英語から日本語へ）する際には Whereas という単語自体は特に訳していないことが多い。

WHEREAS, Buyer desires to purchase certain products of Seller’ manufacture on the terms and conditions set forth in this Agreement; and

買主は、売主が製造する特定の製品につき、本契約に規定された条件に従ってその購入することを希望する。

売主は、係る製品を、本契約の諸条件に基づいて買主に販売することを希望している。
金融分野でも、定款関連など、こうした法務の内容も翻訳に求められる時が多々あるので、法務用語としてのwhereas もぜひ知っておきたい。
whereas と while を一緒に使ってもいい？
ここで素朴な疑問を持つ読者もいるのではなかろうか。厳密にはフォーマルなニュアンスを含む whereas は、同一原稿内、あるいは同じ段落内でも使っていいのか？ 文体が混在してネイティブには不自然な印象をもたれるのではないか？ などなど。
結論から言えば、もちろん一緒に使っても問題なし！
