thereby に対応する「それによって」の「それ」とは、 「その国は、誠意ある対応の義務に重大な違反をした」という、“出来事”　であるので、この点をふまえて翻訳する。

翻訳練習②

「最大のリスクは、新型コロナに関連しており、感染事例が加速すれば再び厳重なロックダウン措置がとられ、景気回復を圧迫することになるだろう。」

The biggest risks were tied to Covid-19, and an acceleration in infection cases would prompt strict lockdown measures again, thereby crushing the economic recovery. 

<補足説明>

この原文の場合は、練習①と異なり、「それによって」などの表現がなく、一見 thereby を使う必要はなさそうに思える。ただ、このような場合は、原文の表す意味をしっかり理解することが大事で、そうでなければ、稚拙な直訳的な翻訳に帰結してしまう。

つまりこの場合は、「再び厳重なロックダウン措置がとられ、景気回復を圧迫することになるだろう」の箇所の中で　“因果関係”　が生じていることにぜひ気づきたいところ。　「再び厳重なロックダウン措置がとられる」という原因と、「景気回復を圧迫することになるだろう」という結果の関係があるのだ。　これをふまえて翻訳する。

あるいは、

「感染事例が加速すれば再び厳重なロックダウン措置がとられ、景気回復を圧迫することになるだろう。」

という箇所で、「感染事例が加速すれば」という原因と、「再び厳重なロックダウン措置がとられ、景気回復を圧迫することになるだろう」という2つの出来事を含めた結果を伴う　“因果関係”　の構造としての解釈も可能だろう。　その場合は、

とも翻訳できる。ただ、英語力が高まるにつれ、できるだけ and を減らし、より引き締まった感のある文体で翻訳したくなるのは言うまでもなく、その意味では、上記翻訳は少々冗長感がある。そうではなく、筆者の模範翻訳のように、there would be an acceleration in infection cases の文を、an acceleration in infection cases would prompt ~ として、名詞句に落とし込む技術は修得したいもの。　名詞 + would/could などは、その名詞に仮定的な意味をもたせることができる点はぜひ覚えておこう。

<補足説明>

比較的長めの原文であるが、こうしたタイプを安易に2文や3文に分けて翻訳するのではなく、thereby などを駆使してきれいに1文にまとめあげたいところ。さて、“因果関係”　はどこにあるか、と気を集中させたところ、「関連市場に大量の供給をもたらした結果」との箇所を発見。この　“出来事”　の結果が、「家賃の圧迫」につながったということだ。　これをふまえて翻訳する。

また、この翻訳では、thereby + ~ing の前にカンマは敢えて使わず、代わりに and を置いてみた。　これは、その前の bringing ~ のところですでに　カンマ + ~ ing の通常の分詞構文を使ったため、重複性を避けるために、カンマ + thereby + ~ ing ではなく、and thereby + ~ ing の形で翻訳してみた。　このように文体に合わせて、応用もできた方がいいので、この変化形はぜひ覚えておいてほしい。

翻訳練習①

thereby + ~ ing の場合と同様、まずは因果関係があるかを探す。 

「炭素を豊富に含んだ永久凍土を保全する」という原因があって、「排出量を削減する」という結果につながるという因果関係が成立しているのが分かる。

特にここでは、「北極圏の回復」という主語が、「炭素を豊富に含んだ永久凍土を保全する」と「排出量を削減する」の両方に「役立つ可能性がある」という解釈も翻訳の構造に含めたい。

また、could help to ~ の to 不定詞の後の動詞の原形として、conserve ~ と、and thereby + reduce の両方が含まれる解釈の翻訳としている。　thereby + V の使い方として、こうした to 不定詞 + 動詞の原形の中での使われ方をおさえておこう。

翻訳練習②

まずは thereby が使えそうな因果関係を探る。

「すでに強固な財務基盤をさらに強化することによって当社のビジネス戦略を実行するために」の中で、因果関係を発見。「すでに強固な財務基盤をさらに強化する」という原因があり、そのことによって、「当社のビジネス戦略を実行する」との結果となる。　また、これも「～するために」とあるので、to 不定詞の目的用法が使えそうだ。

これも練習①と同じく、further reinforce ~ と and thereby execute ~ のともに、to 不定詞の後の動詞の原形として使われている。

外国の投資家が同地域の企業を評価することは困難であり、その結果、それら企業は明らかに投資対象とはなりにくいであろう。

ここでは、it would の would は、make it difficult と、 and の後の thereby make の両方にかかる構造だ。 It would make it difficult と and it would thereby make them …. ということだ。

また、前段でもふれたが、It would make it difficult ~ の文と、and (it would) thereby make them ~ の文との間に、一呼吸置きたいため、and の前にカンマを入れている。このように、文をまたいで助動詞がかかる場合には、カンマを置くことが多い。

and the United States was thereby unable to fulfill ~ として、S + V の後に thereby が使われ、今までにない形だ。こうしたケースは、その thereby によっての結果となる主体を明確にしたい時に発生する。つまり、ここでの thereby は、the Americans who enabled Ghosn’s escape were themselves able to evade justice という原因のことを指すが、それによって、the Americans ではなく、the United States が unable to fulfill だというように、主体の対象を明らかにするためにも、主語もともなった thereby の使われ方になるというわけだ。

この構造を分かりやすくするため、少し簡単な文で説明し直すと、

He has his desire to minimize his loss and thereby (to) maximize his return. 

という文の構造と同じであり、これは「彼は、損失を最小限に抑え、それによって利益を最大にしたいという願望がある。」との意味である。

この書き換えた文のように、his desire to 以下が短ければ、(to) 不定詞も省略して、基本的な and thereby + V の形をそのまま使える。

ただ、例文のように、his desire to 以下が、minimise the entitlement of third parties to take a cut of the settlement sum (or any damages award) that he fully expected to receive from Mr Ashley の非常に長い部分と、maximise his return の部分とに分かれている場合は、その切れ目を明確にするためにも、maximise his return は、his desire to の後ろにかかっているのですよ、とはっきりと示すためにも、もう一度 to 不定詞を置いているという構造である。
