第1回 【crossroads、insuperable、precipice】
<最高難度やボキャブラリー・ビルディングのための金融語彙> メニューの第1回は、crossroads、insuperable、precipice の語彙を見ていきたい。
crossroads = 岐路、分岐点
「岐路、分岐点」の意味では、turning point （転換のニュアンスが強めだが） や critical point などが日本人にとっても使いやすく、実際頻度も高い。
だからこそ難易度はさほど高くないが、案外使いこなせていないので、ボキャブラリー・ビルディングのためにも crossroads を覚えておこう。特に at a crossroads の形で使われる。
まずは、本ブログでも頻繁に引用される英英辞典で、その微妙なニュアンスもチェックしておきたい。

要は、a point/time when important decisions must be made なのだ。
それでは、金融、経済報道で突出した信頼性を誇る Financial Times でその実用例を確認しておきたい。

insuperable = 解決出来ない、克服出来ない、乗り越えられない
次は、insuperable だ。最高難度の単語である。もちろん金融分野でもネイティブはしっかり使ってくるが、日本人では、この単語を知っている人の方が圧倒的に少ないのではないだろうか。
「解決出来ない、克服出来ない、乗り越えられない」の意味であるが、このような時、日本人翻訳者は、cannot overcome など動詞を使って訳出しようとしたり、中には impossible to solve など少し稚拙な訳語でしか対応できない人もいるのが現実だ。だからこそ、この機会にinsuperable をぜひ覚えて次の翻訳機会には自信をもって使おう。
まずは英英辞典で確認すると、

Oxford Dictionary: (of difficulties, problems, etc.) that cannot be dealt with successfully
Cambridge Dictionary: (especially of a problem) so great or severe that it cannot be defeated or dealt with successfully

つまり、cannot be dealt with successfully の意味なのだ。

precipice = 危機、窮地
今回の最後は precipice。
「危機」とくれば、crisis あるいは danger あるいは critical situation ぐらいしか思い浮かばない人は多いのではないだろうか。
そんな時は、ぜひ precipice を覚えておこう。ネイティブは金融分野でもしっかりこれを使ってレポートや記事を書いている。

disaster は未だ生じていないのだが、それに close な dangerous situation ということだ。
この単語の金融分野での用例を見ておくためFinancial Timesでそのauthenticity (真正性) を確認しておきたい。

「危機」、「窮地」の precipice であるが、ここでもう一つだけ同義の表現を紹介しておきたい。これは単語ではなく vultures are circling という文である。つまり 「ハゲタカが死にかけている獲物の上空で旋回している」 → 「危機(窮地) に頻している」という比喩でもある。こうした表現はフォーマルな文書では使えないが、粋な読み物としてはネイティブも好んで使う。
