新型コロナウイルスの変異種が世界中で拡がっており、多くの企業がそれに起因する経済的影響への対応に苦労している中、頑なに株式公開を敬遠し、できるだけ長く未公開でいたいようであったシリコンバレーのテック系スタートアップ企業が、ようやくその態度を変え始めており、今や大挙して上場しようとしている。

証券取引所では今年、VC支援を受けた米企業18社（非公開での評価額が10億ドル以上とされる、通称ユニコーン）を迎え入れ、過去最高を記録した。

このような新しい展開の特徴として、その規模と期間の長さが際立っており、上場企業の未公開期間は2010年には3年であったのに対し、同企業らは平均して10年間非上場であった。           

一部の投資家は、米国のスタートアップは、急成長を遂げる数年間をプライベート市場で費やし、一般の投資家からその利益を共有できる機会を奪っていることを懸念している。   

実際、多額の資金がプライベート市場から調達可能で、未上場にとどまることに合理的なデメリットはないようだ。           

その場合、プライベート・エクイティ・ファンド、ベンチャー・キャピタリスト、バンカーなど、少数のプレイヤーだけが、今後しばらくの間、有利な状況を享受することになる。

Whilst a new strain of COVID-19 is sweeping across the globe and many companies struggle to cope with the resulting economic fallout, Silicon Valley tech start-ups, which tenaciously shunned the public markets and seemed to want to stay private for as long as possible, finally starts to change their tune, with them now going public in droves.

Public stock exchanges have this year welcomed 18 US VC-backed companies, so called unicorns that are privately valued at over $1bn, hitting a record high. 

The unique characteristics of such new development are emphasized in its size and length, and indeed those companies have stayed private for 10 years on average, as compared to 3 years in 2010.

Some investors have worried that US start-ups are spending their fastest-growing years in private markets, depriving ordinary investors of the opportunity to share in their gains.

Indeed, there is so much money available from private markets that there doesn’t seem to be any reasonable downside to staying private.

In that case, only a handful of players such as private equity funds, venture capitalists, and bankers can exclusively enjoy lucrative advantage for some time to come.
